The internal state meshes with the external environment to form patterns of associative ‘relatives’ (what is relative in space to each conceptual perception). What is, though, a direct relation between subject and object, and which is which (could the internal state ever be the 'object' of our percepts – perhaps reverse the natural mental relation and possibly reflect the agency?).
